Mental Health & Well-being

mental well-being Mar 27, 2023

Mental health is a state of mental well-being that enables people to cope with the stresses of life, realize their abilities, learn, and work well, and contribute to a thriving community. It is an integral component of health and well-being that underpins our individual and collective skills to make decisions, build relationships and shape our world.

Just as with physical health, situations and circumstances can undermine our mental health. For instance, just as your physical body can have the flu and you would need to take time off from work to rest and get better, similarly, the loss of a loved one or divorce can take a toll on mental wellness. During such times it is essential to recognize the importance of giving your mind a break. And that could be like taking a nap, doing nothing, just staring into space or nature, entering a meditative state.

When our physical bodies are exhausted, it is easy to understand that we need to give our bodies a break. But we don’t fully understand how to give our minds a break. So I will share some tips on giving your mind a break by entering a meditative state. The meditative state is where your mind is fully absorbed in the present. It does not wander into what happened in the past or what will happen in the future. Entering a meditative state takes practice. Some tips on how to enter a meditative state:

  • Soaking in a tub of water, a pool, the sea
  • Take a nature walk where you focus on the natural beauty around you
  • Read a book
  • Listen to positive, encouraging messages like a podcast or YouTube video
  • Dance, where you allow yourself to move to the music
  • Listen to music or play an instrument
  • Garden
  • Clean (your house, your car, etc.)
  • Any form of exercise

The idea here is to get your mind to focus on appealing and captivating activities. Just as physical exercise is most beneficial if you can do it for 30- 60 minutes 3 to 5 times a week, so with mental wellness, engaging in activities that promote your sense of health and boost your confidence should be done 3 to 5 days a week, if not daily. That’s also why I am a huge believer in physical exercises because it not only strengthens your physical body, but it also relaxes and strengthens your mind.
